This coming Sunday, the 10th in Ordinary time in Year C of the lectionary, features two closely linked stories about young men being raised from the grip of death – one by Israel’s great prophet Elijah, and the other by an even greater prophet, Jesus. Luke’s telling of the latter story, and he is the only gospel writer to tell it, emphasizes both the similarities and the differences between these two archetypal tales, and in so doing confronts us with Jesus’ commanding presence in our own lives.
