You think your garden has problems with weeds? Ain’t nothing on what God has to deal with! Well, that is what this Sunday’s gospel reading seems to be saying. It’s not just that unwanted plants appear, but something much more sinister: whenever God sows something good in our world, his enemy responds with some really poisonous nasties that will render the crop unusable unless something is done to get rid of them. Unpacking this metaphor exposes the dark side to our spiritual reality: we experience good and evil intertwined, and this will be true throughout our development as disciples of Christ and agents of God’s kingdom.
