Marching Orders …

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading, from the start of Luke 10. Jesus sends out 70 of his disciples in teams of two to continue the mission within Israel that has already begun under the twelve apostles. This, in Luke’s eyes, is clearly a precursor to the ongoing mission of the ever-expanding mission of the Church depicted in the book of Acts. His instructions to them are meant for us as well. One problem: the social and cultural situation addressed by these instructions seem far removed from what we encounter 2000 years later in New Zealand. How should we interpret them now?
