This Sunday’s gospel reading from Luke 16 features the Parable of the Unjust Steward, as it is commonly known. Over the years it has brought forth plenty of debate among scholars because of its paradoxical nature. On the surface, it looks as though Jesus is using a story about a self-serving wheeler-and-dealer in support of his maxim, “You cannot serve God and wealth.” The two just don’t seem to add up, or not until we place the story within its socio-economic context, especially the deep-seated structure of patronage and the biblical understanding of economic justice.
