John the Baptist confronts us every year on the second Sunday in Advent, and his message across the four gospels varies only in the details. Matthew gives it to us at full strength. Just before we get to sentimental about the pretty little baby at Christmas, we need to hear the prophetic warning. This little one will grow up into a man carrying an axe and a pitchfork.
