This Sunday’s parable concerning the violent showdown between a rich landlord and his rural tenants raises more than one question, but the central one in my mind is the question in this post’s title. As Christians, we need to get clear about what outcomes God wants in the relationship we have with him through Christ. Getting it wrong could be disastrous, and frequently has been in our “Christian” civilisation. The parable uses three quotes from Israel’s prophetic literature to clarify our thinking. We may conclude that God wants us to deliver social justice within our world and to renew our trust in Him rather than be intimidated by the coercive power-holders of our time.
