The second Sunday in Advent every year focuses on the ministry of John the Baptiser, not merely to note his importance as a precursor to the public career of Jesus, but in order to make us think about how we share in the ongoing proclamation of the Gospel of God’s reign over human affairs in our own day and age. All around us, beneath all the cultural baggage of another approaching Christmas season, we are surrounded by people longing for something more satisfying, for a credible message from God that will make sense of our human condition.
That is when the Church comes in, embodying God’s eternal word to us all in Christ. Really???
